‘Sadly, the next set of cancellations could be the biggest – the rest of the season.’

NHL cancels games through Jan. 14

‘“It’s fair to say you’re looking at the middle of January as the date by which this needs to be resolved and we need to be playing hockey,” Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told Team 1260 AM in Edmonton, Alberta.’

Hope dims on hockey by Jan. 1

‘“I think fans would like to see hockey be played, especially the best players in the world,” Sabres defenseman Jordan Leopold said. “Here we are parked on the sidelines again, the second time in seven, eight years, and it’s unfortunate. Eventually it will subside and there will be a resolution. Hopefully, soon.”’

Sabres players mum on union’s possible dissolution

‘“The process is we’re still negotiating here and still waiting to see if the league’s going to respond to our last proposal,” Leopold said, ducking the question a bit. “ … We seem to have this trend where we put a proposal out, and there’s a couple weeks where everything goes real quiet and then there’s some commotion again. Hopefully, we get that commotion.”’

NHL season still salvageable

‘The NHL has never been more popular, as evidenced by last season’s record $3.4 billion in total revenues. The golden goose (Canada goose?) is just too fat to kill today, so whatever issues need to be bridged between owners and players — a 50/50 split of revenues, five-year individual contract lengths, a 10-year CBA — the skate to the middle should be a short one.’

NHL begins some legal maneuvers

‘One was a class action lawsuit to confirm the legality of the lockout. The other was an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board against the NHL Players’ Association.’

NHL lockout penalizes businesses that depend on hockey crowds

‘“I’m not even open,” said co-owner Marisa Proietta-Milbrand, who estimated that the South Park Avenue tavern gets 600 patrons on home-game nights but now is down to a skeleton crew and open mainly on weekends and for holiday parties.’

Shoulder injury ices Switzerland stint for Sabres’ Ennis

‘“(It’s) not bad, but I just wanted to be cautious just in case the season starts, I want to be 100 percent,” Ennis said. “For the most part, if I was playing in the NHL right now, then I’d be playing. But I’m just being careful with it. It’s just a little shoulder issue.”’

SBA plans workshop for businesses missing hockey

‘Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says the SBA plans a workshop Friday in Buffalo, where restaurants, hotels and other businesses are missing the crowds they normally see for Sabres games.’
