Girgensons says no to Vermont, yes to Sabres

‘“We talked about this for a day and a little bit, and it was a pretty hard decision just because I was close to … Sneddon,” Girgensons, smiling and wearing a Sabres polo shirt, said Friday inside the First Niagara Center. “This is the toughest decision I’ve ever made in my life.”’

Update: Girgensons picks Sabres over Catamounts

‘“We have stated often that if we are going to lose Zemgus, we hope it’s to the NHL team that selects him in the draft. Buffalo feels confident that Zemgus can play for them this year as well as with the Rochester Americans of the AHL,” Sneddon said. “We support Zemgus and wish him the best of luck as he begins his professional career with Buffalo.’

Sabres sign one of their first-round draft picks

‘Girgensons, a native of Riga, Latvia, is the highest Latvian ever selected in the draft, and spent the last two seasons in the United States Hockey League.’

Sabres agree to terms with Girgensons

‘Girgensons, who was selected with the 14th pick in the first round, spent the last two seasons with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League, recording 45 goals, 59 assists and 115 penalty minutes through 100 games.’

Girgensons, Sabres agree to terms

‘Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Zemgus Girgensons on a three-year, entry-level contract.’

Sabres’ Regier, Ruff say Roy ready

‘”It was an elective [surgery], a choice,” Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier said Thursday night during the team’s development camp scrimmage in First Niagara Center. “He could have played. He did play with it. It was a decision made by that organization. I spoke to Joe before when we went through all the medical records prior to when we made the trade. [Roy] was rehabbing, he played with the shoulder last year and he would have played going forward.”‘

Regier wishes Dom the best – out west

‘”One thing I am sure of: [Hasek] has no doubt in his mind that he can play,” Regier told reporters Thursday night during a break in the team’s development camp scrimmage. “I think it probably gives him a little bit of lift seeing somebody like [Martin] Brodeur play at 40 in the Stanley Cup final. I know better than to question Dom’s desire and his ability. Unfortunately, it’s not something that was going to fit here.”‘

Team to make a special ‘Connection’

‘Team President Ted Black said the statue is just a step. The Sabres are creating their own “Alumni Plaza” with the sculpture as its centerpiece. The plaza will honor every Sabre. All 401 players will be put on plaques, which will go in brick columns that support a walkway above the plaza. Sabres fans can also purchase for $100 and reserve custom plaques to be placed among those of the players.’

Regier says Sabres dealt healthy Roy

‘“We’re very confident in the decision by our medical staff,” Regier said Thursday inside the First Niagara Center during the second intermission of a prospect scrimmage. “He played with it last year. He could’ve played with it next year. It was a decision by the Dallas Stars. It was as simple as that. We were very comfortable with his situation and remain so.”’

Buffalo Sabres commission statue of famous line

‘Sabres President Ted Black announced the project Thursday. He says the statue is inspired by a photo taken during a 1975 game and is being sculpted by Texas artist Jerry McKenna. It’ll be unveiled Oct. 12 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the French Connection’s first playing together in 1972.’

Sabres pass on potential Hasek comeback

‘Hasek last suited up for the Detroit Red Wings in 2008, helping the club win their fourth Stanley Cup in an 12-year span thanks to a 27-10-3 mark with a 2.14 goals-against average and five shutouts.’

Wise, Girgensons lead Blue to 7-3 win over Gold

‘”I think we’ve got maybe as heavy a load of talent as we’ve had,” the head coach summarized. “Some real good skill, some good size. We’ve got some good skill on the back end and up front I think we saw some of that talent there in the scrimmage.”‘

Regier comments on stagnant market, Roy surgery

‘”I think the big names are still out there and as far as free agents Shane Doan is out there, but there really aren’t many left. I think there will be a lot of competition for a few names,” Regier said. “I think it will move at some point, but no one seems to be in a hurry right now.”‘

Hasek Meets with Sabres about Return to NHL

‘”We are in discussions with a number of teams and are pursuing a multi-year contract for him. He is ready and feels he can continue playing for a few years at an extremely high NHL level.”‘

Wise scores three as Blue tops Gold in scrimmage

‘”I didn’t really know what to expect coming in. I just tried to play my game,” Wise said following the game. “I’m kind of like a physical guy, I’m good around the net and I get pucks out. So I was just trying to do that and I was lucky enough to get a few goals so it was a good game for me.”‘
