'The Sabres will be holding an autograph session following the game.'

Ruff out to fix woeful penalty killing

‘“Last year I was disappointed,” Ruff said after Thursday afternoon’s practice in the Amherst Pepsi Center. “We’ve talked about the penalty killing and re-establishing ourselves. To have the worst penalty killing in the [Eastern Conference] at home, for me, was an embarrassment.”’

eGone fishing’ is Lorentz’s explanation

‘“My passion for doing the games hasn’t diminished in the least,” Lorentz said. “The thing that I hated was getting to the games when they were out of town. I’ve been doing the travel for so many years, I think it just caught up to me. It was a gut-wrenching decision to make. I just felt the time was right. All the ownerships treated me terrifically. It also was a positive experience for me and a great way to spend life after [playing] hockey.”’

Numminen released from hospital, recovering at home

'Numminen, 39, had surgery Sept. 20 to repair a faulty valve. Numminen has said he planned to continue playing after doctors informed him that, barring complications, he would continue to live a normal life. Numminen added he could return to the Sabres by December.'

Sabres Practice Update

'Sabre foward Ales Kotalik left Thursday's practice with a tweaked knee. Kotalik skated off on his own power after 3-on-3 drills. Paul Gaustad and Mike Ryan both missed today's workout.'

Numminen released from hospital

'“Teppo was released from the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday evening and is now resting comfortable at home," said Hartich concerning Numminen's heart surgery last Thursday. "His post-operative recovery continues to be excellent and Teppo's right on schedule for a full recovery. His spirits are great and he's getting stronger everyday."'

Kotalik leaves practice, Connolly improving

'Connolly will be treated with the most finesse. Having only appeared in a handful of games last season and with pressure mounting to fill the void left by the departure of last season's co-captains, his longevity during the regular season is the Sabres top priority. "The most important part before he plays is getting him healthy," said Ruff. "We're not going to stick him in a game just to get a game in. We have another week to get ready for the season. Unless he feels really good, my feeling is that we're not going to put him in the game."'

Q and A with Maxim Afinogenov

'You have been a part of the Buffalo Sabres longer than any other player in the locker room. What has changed in the time that you have been here? MA: It has changed a lot. The first thing is everybody and the new faces on the team. I think we changed our style of the game too a lot. We improved a lot also.'

Q&A with T.J. Brennan

'HF: I know it's early in camp but is there anything you've picked up from the veterans so far? TJB: When I'm on the bench I definitely watch guys like Campbell and how they skate up and make passes with their head up and how they stickhandle without losing speed in their stride. I definitely take notice of stuff like that, little things that can help you get to the next level.'

Lorentz will be missed

'Every year, Mrs. Lorentz would find me in December to see if a hockey card of her son was in my possession. She would then tell me to look for a car with a New York license plate in her driveway. That meant Jim was visiting for Christmas and if we dropped off his card, there would be an autograph picture of him waiting for me.'

Roy makes point with six of them

'The job is that of Sabres No. 1 center, and Roy’s resume grew immensely in the Air Canada Centre. The fourth-year player was the best on the ice, scoring three times and setting up three other goals to irritate the announced crowd of 18,892.'

Injury list concerns Ruff

'“[Tim] Connolly’s out. We don’t know how long,” Ruff said. “[Paul] Gaustad’s out with a groin. [Maxim] Afinogenov’s a hip flexor. I don’t know how long that will be. [Andrew] Peters is out. Who else we got? [Dmitri] Kalinin’s another one. He skated today lightly, so hopefully tomorrow is a better day.”'
