'Bartlett flew into Rochester, Buffalo's American League affiliate on Tuesday at the request of the Sabres. He met with officials and watched a preseason game on Wednesday night, then drove to Buffalo for further meetings on Thursday before heading back to Rochester that evening. Although now encouraged that the Sabres could be sending some players Bakersfield's way, Bartlett said details remained to be ironed out and it would be sometime next week before that could be accomplished.'
‘Daniel Briere was back on the ice after suffering a hip-flexor injury. He is planning on playing in the back-to-back games against Pittsburgh. Jochen Hecht did not practice due to a groin problem.’
'Now the rest of the hockey world does too, which means Buffalo will start the new season with the kind of expectations that come from tasting success and being rewarded with big raises. In other words, the Sabres, who went through minimal personnel changes this summer, won't be sneaking up on anybody as they did much of last season.'
'Michael Gilbert, the Sabres public relations director, called the team's financial support of the three organizations a "natural fit" for the team. "We're always trying to give back to the community," he said. "Those three groups need the support, and it helps us give back to three groups that have an affinity for skating and what we do."'
'Buffalo Sabres left wing Jochen Hecht missed the second half of Wednesday's practice with a groin strain, but he's not expected to miss much time, if any.'
'"I told him to adapt what you can with the new logo."'

'Coach Lindy Ruff's club made only minor changes in the off-season and looks ready to take another step toward the Stanley Cup.'
'"My view is that it's my job to take," Paetsch said after Tuesday's practice in HSBC Arena. "I'm coming in here, and I want to be a Buffalo Sabre, and I'm going to do everything possible to make that happen."'
'"It's not even on the same side," Briere said after skating by himself for about 40 minutes in HSBC Arena. "It has nothing to do with [the previous injury]." Sabres coach Lindy Ruff indicated Briere should be back for this weekend's final two exhibition games.'
'"Anytime you lose the last game of the year, that's something sour that sticks with you, especially when it's a game away from something you dreamed about playing for," he said. "And I guess I can say this team, in its history, has never won a Cup, so there is a lot of unfinished business."'
'The Sabres training camp continues at the arena with Connolly working out by himself, on the side, while his teammates take the ice. The play-making center was drilled last May, in round two of the playoffs, and he hasn't done anything since. Lindy Ruff says it's going to take awhile..for Connolly to get back in action.'

‘Players such as Chris Thorburn, Jiri Novotny, Michael Ryan, Daniel Paille, Nathan Paetsch and Andrej Sekera may not be household names now, but they could wind up being major contributors on a team that has lofty expectations.’
