Power play for Sheppard

'As his hockey career started to take off, Ray Sheppard took up golf during the offseason to become ''one of the guys'' with his Buffalo Sabres teammates. During the years, Sheppard got pretty good. Good enough that he now is one step away from playing in the 105th U.S. Open at Pinehurst.'

'In the four seasons following his selection by the Sabres, Artem Kriukov seemed destined to be the answer to the question, “What player was the all-time worst first round selection by the Sabres?” Kriukov may yet be the answer to that question, but he seemed to make progress this past season.'

New Kid on the Ice

'“You make a lot of good friends and get to know people around the town,” stated MacArthur, who looked like a kid in a candy store in Rochester’s locker room. “(Medicine Hat) was a great hockey town and we sellout almost every game. It’s too bad but everyone has to move on and this is what I’m hoping to do. I’m just happy to come up (to Rochester) and get a taste of it.”'

Paying the price

'"Everyone thinks we're all millionaires, but I'm far from a millionaire," Boulton said. "I've played four years in the league, and I've saved enough to start a future after hockey. But I'm not swimming in it. Two years before I was playing in the NHL I was making $14,000 in the East Coast Hockey League."'

'His future should only get better. Had it not been for the NHL labor dispute that wiped out this season, it's very likely Vanek would've already made his Sabres debut. Prospect Highlight: Michael Funk

'He needs to work on increasing his strength. He’s six-foot four-inches and 194 lbs now, but he needs to fill out and mature in that department. We’re hoping that if he continues to workout, lift weights and watch his diet, he’ll be able to play at around 210-215 lbs.'
